Illegal Fishing
The lack of fuel to patrol is
the major obstacle faced by
Costa Rican Coast Guard boats to
intercept foreign fishing
vessels which illegally operate
in the territorial waters.
Coast
Guard chief Carlos Alvarado
admitted that because of this
weakness they are able to act
only when the precise location
of an illegal vessel is known.
He added that, so far this year,
they have submitted 32 Costa
Rican boats to the corresponding
authorities because they did not
have the proper fishing
licenses.
Meanwhile, dozens of
Costa Rican fishing boats have
been seized by countries such as
Panama, Ecuador, and Mexico for
illegally operating in their
waters.
