Strike Paralyzes Honduran Capital
Demanding immediate reduction of the high price of fuel, thousands of taxi drivers blocked main streets and avenues to public places and paralyzed traffic in the Honduran capital on Wednesday.

Edilberto Robles, spokesperson of the Taxi Drivers Association, confirmed they would keep control of the streets until President Manuel Zelaya fulfills his commitment to reduce fuel prices. “We are desperate because of the dignitary’s delay,” he asserted.

The Honduran press headlined the situation in Tegucigalpa, where vehicles are parked every which way, preventing access to and from the outskirts of the city.

Some taxi drivers put rocks and tacks on the streets, burned tires, and chanted slogans against the government.

Thousands of professionals and other workers had long walks to get to work because transportation was at a standstill. Schools, universities and numerous centers and businesses were closed.
