UN
Passes PR, Falklands Resolutions
The UN Special Committee for
Decolonization this week passed
resolutions to end the US
colonial domination of Puerto
Rico and start talks between
Argentina and Great Britain over
the Falklands.
The Puerto Rico measure urged
the US to begin a process to end
more than 100 years of colonial
supremacy on the Caribbean
island. "The US government must
allow Puerto Ricans to freely
exert their undeniable right for
self-determination and
independence," the declaration
reads.
Washington´s reluctance to cope
with the issue was denounced
during debates prior to the
approval of the document,
presented by Cuba and sponsored
by Venezuela.
US colonialism "has intended to
pull Puerto Rico from its
Caribbean, Latin American
context," said Cuban ambassador
Rodrigo Malmierca when
presenting the bill.
Referring to the Falklands
issue, the UN committee called
for Argentina and Great Britain
to resume negotiations to seek a
peaceful solution for the
sovereignty dispute.
Presented by Chile, and
supported by Bolivia, Cuba, and
Venezuela, the document
recognizes the Falklands
question is different to other
colonial cases, as it deals with
the Argentina-Great Britain
dispute over the islands´
sovereignty.
