Police to Bully Guatemala
Farmers
Tension is growing in Guatemala
between a farmer-organized call
to a national uprising after
Easter and police warning they
will clamp down on
demonstrations.
The National Indigenous and
Farmer Coordinating Office
(CONIC) and other unions and
popular organizations announced
road blocks, strikes and general
protests, due to lack of
government response to a
nine-demand document.
Solution to some 100 land
conflicts, cancellation of the
debt for thousands of farmer
families, cease of violent
evictions, access to development
programs, and the end of mining
concessions to foreign entities
are among those demands.
In response to this call for a
national uprising, the
Government Ministry threatened
to break up demonstrations by
force.
