More Money and Drugs Appearing
in Panama
The discovery of new cocaine
consignments and packages
containing seven million dollars
renewed fears on Wednesday that
Panama has become one of the
favorite drug trafficking
corridors.
National Police spokesman
Fernando Rodriguez told
journalists that no one knows
for certain the exact sum of
money found in the Colon Free
Trade Zone, 49 miles northeast
of Panama City.
Security forces of the zone were
involved in the discovery, after
following a lead provided by the
Police Investigation Office,
Customs, the Colon Anti-Drug
Department and the Judicial
Technical Police.
Preliminary results of the
investigation indicate it was
money in transit from Guatemala
to Colombia, allegedly linked to
drug trafficking, explained
Rodriguez.
"It entered through Paso Canoa
to be packed at the Free Zone
and sent to Colombia. It seems
that the total amount exceeds
seven million dollars, but it is
the National Bank which has the
final say," he added.
In the last two weeks, police
forces have seized more than 5.5
tons of cocaine, while another
seven tons of drugs seized in
the previous three months were
burnt on Tuesday at Patacon
hill, on the outskirts of the
capital.
