Fatal Bus Crash!
The driver, Manuel Tremiño Blandón, died
after losing control of his bus early
yesterday morning.
He had just picked up the bus to start his
day, as he had for the past 4 years, when he
lost control and crashed the bus. No
passengers were in the vehicle at the time.

Zapatistas
Emerge from the Shadows
The
leftist Zapatista National Liberation
Army (EZLN), based in the southern
Mexican state of Chiapas, have emerged
from the shadows after two years of near
silence to announce structural changes
and new actions that ”not everyone is
going to like” and to break off ties
with groups that the mostly indigenous
guerrilla organisation says treat it as
a sort of ”Cinderella”.
In four communiqués issued during the
past week, the EZLN, which took up arms
in 1994 but has not engaged in violence
since, appears to be aiming at
reconquering space in the Mexican
political arena, something that will not
be easy, say observers. >more

Impunity
and broken promises
Boats
arrive on the muddy banks of Bellavista,
the urban center of the Bojayá
municipality in the Pacific department
of Chocó. They carry with them
government and non-government officials,
members of the diplomatic corps and
journalists, but also scores of
survivors returning to the humble
township for the first time since
fleeing a year earlier, many still too
traumatized to return for good.
All have come to commemorate the first
anniversary of the deaths of more than
100 people in the town’s tiny church
on May 2, 2002, and to confront a year
of broken promises and impunity that has
seen numerous army officers and
paramilitary commanders elude justice. >more
