Drunk Drivers
Continue To
Kill, Time and
Again
Drunk drivers
continue kill
and to mock the
law,
notwithstanding
that the law
sends them to
jail, but the
courts then sets
them free.
Such as the case
of the fatal
accident in La
Fortuna de San
Carlos this
weekend, where a
motorcyclists
died at the
hands of a drunk
driver.
The La Fortuna
case,
unfortunately,
is not an
isolated case.
The Ley de
Tránsito
(traffic law)
calls for a
driver with a
blood alcohol
content of 0.75
or more to go
directly to
jail.
The Tránsitos
(traffic cops)
and the Fuerza
Pública (police)
officers are all
doing their job,
taking the drunk
driver into
custody,
escorting him or
her to the local
court house and
confiscating the
vehicle.
However, most of
the time
including many
cases where
fatalities are
involved, within
hours the drunk
driver is back
on the streets,
being let free
by a judge, with
a court date in
hand.
Where is the
harsh
punishment? Is
the new law more
bark than bite?
If judges
continue to let
drunk drivers
free how will
the lesson be
learned?
We can take
example from the
current
situation of
criminals being
set free by
judges even
after police
have caught them
red handed.
Costa Ricans
today live
insecure because
not of the rise
in crime due to
more criminals,
but due to
criminals acting
with impunity in
the face of an
inefficient
judicial system.
The same is
happening on the
roads. Drunk
drivers continue
to kill time and
again.
