Irazú Volcano
Lagoon Dry
The water lagoon
in the Irazú
volcano has
disappeared
according to the
reports by the
Universidad de
Costa Rica (UCR).
The volcano is
located east of
San José,
looking down on
Cartago, has
been losing its
lake water for
almost five
years and now is
completely dry.
UCR
volcanologists
have been quoted
as saying in the
Spanish language
daily that the
lack of rain
last year is the
cause, blaming
it mainly on the
El Niño
phenomenon.
The lake was one
some 30 metres
(165 feet) deep,
holding some
half million
cubic metres of
water.
This is not the
first time the
Irazú volcano
lagoon has
dried, the last
time in 1991 and
then filling
back up again.
The Irazú,
located between
the
Turrialba
and Poás has not
shown any signs
of activity as
the other two,
which in the
past weeks have
been spewing
gases from its
crater.
