Technical and economic offers for a tender to build and operate a port complex in Costa Rica’s eastern Limón province must be presented this week, an official from port authority Japdeva told BNamericas.

“The deadline to present the offers is on Friday, May 7 at 2pm local time. This is the established deadline unless the comptroller general requests an extension,” the official said.

Once the bids are opened, national concessions board CNC will have 45 working days to award the tender, the official said.

Over 42 national and international firms have purchased the bidding rules, including companies from Brazil, Colombia, France and the US.

The winner will need to invest us$812 million in the port.

The tender to build the port was first launched in April 2009. However, the process was delayed due to several corrections to the original bidding rules. The terminal will be developed 10km from the existing Moín and Limón ports and involves a construction area of 1,500m2.

The new port will have the capacity to handle post-Panamax vessels.

Construction will be carried out in two stages. The first phase involves building sea defenses, the first 900m of the dock and three docking berths.

In a second phase, the concessionaire will add 600m to the pier and build two more berths. Both phases should be operating by 2016. The new terminal is part of the government’s port master plan to be developed over the next 35 years and is the first step in the process to concession the Limón-Moín port complex.
