The closure of
the Braulio
Carrillo (Ruta
32) is costing
millions in
losses,
especially for
transport
companies,
manufactures and
growers, as
moving goods to
and from San
José and the
Limón port is
impossible, for
the only
alternate,
through
Turrialba, is
not possible for
big rigs.
For those trucks
that can make
the trip through
the narrow and
winding road,
the additional
cost of fuel and
time is
considerable.
The Braulio
Carrillo, east
of the Zurquí
tunnel, has been
closed for 8
days now and
efforts to
re-open the road
last week failed
and the expected
re-opening of
Thursday as
announced on
Monday, will
probably not be
med.
The problem in
re-opening the
road is weather.
Given the
unstability of
several of the "taludes"
(slopes) the
Ministerio de
Obra Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT)
has decided to
blast,
eliminating the
possibility of
more landslides,
that in addition
to choking off
the road, is a
major risk for
traffic.
However, weather
conditions have
delayed the
blast. The
dynamite is on
site. The
workers are
ready. But the
rain and weather
conditions will
not cease to
allow the blast
of some 4.000
cubic metres of
earth, to
provoke a
landslide.
David Meléndez

Emergencias del
Ministerio de
Obras Públicas y
Transportes,
said that they
will attempt
again today to
get the
explosives into
the mountains.
Meléndez
explained that
the weather
conditions on
Monday did not
allow for the
work crews to
get to
explosives to
the blast site.
For now, the
MOPT is saying
that the road
could be
re-opened on
Friday.
But, in reality,
the re-opening
is a wait and
see, all
depending on the
weather.
