Guatemala: Highest Central
America Violence Rate
GUATEMALA - Guatemala has been ratified as
the most violent country in Central America
and one of the unsafest nations in Latin
America, after registering over 1,600
murders with weapons from January to April
this year.
The National Institute for Forensic Sciences
provided this figure, according to the
amount of autopsies that were carried out to
corpses, the cause of death of which was the
use of weapons. Around 1,540 deaths were
caused by fire arms and 135 by stabs.
From the total of autopsies due to crimes in
each case and only until March, 1080 men and
119 women were killed with fire arms, and 80
men and 69 women died of stabs.
Guatemala reported 790 women that died
violently, followed by El Salvador with 579,
Honduras with 405 and Nicaragua with 79.
Alvaro Colom's government is constantly
reiterating the efforts to increase the
level of public safety and the struggle
against the actions by gangs and
drug-trafficking groups, which have a an
extended presence in the national territory. |
