Television Sets Selling Like Pancakes At Costa Rica's Retailers

The true winners of the World Cup in Costa Rica are retailers, especially those retailers who sell television sets.

An estimated 2.000 television sets a week a been sold during the several weeks leading up to the World Cup games, according to sales figures tabulated from retailers, though each is guarding closely the actual numbers of sales.

The demand for television is also due to the combination of the Father's Day falling within the World Cup games.

According to Francisco Ramírez, marketing manager for Grupo Monge, who told LA Republica, that all types and sized of television sets have been selling - plasma, LCD and LED.

Ramírez added that the 32 incher flat screen is the most sold.

Ads for television sets have been filling the newspaper pages for more than a month, from offers of a few thousand colones every two weeks to special deals on "cash" purchases.

Prices can range from ¢500.000 to ¢1.5 million colones, depending on the size and technology. At Pricesmart, the first two shelf isles at the entry of the store are filled with every size and type of television sets. Normally the the retailer dedicated only one shelf isle to televisions.

Some retailers are offering a free DVD or other item to the purchase of a particular type or size of television, while others are offering discounted prices, while still others are making the purchase attractive with now down payment, easy credit and low payment plans.
