Unemployment Reduced
in Ecuador
QUITO - According to the National Institute
for Statistics and Census, unemployment
decreased 9.1 percent in the third trimester
in 2009 and 7.9 percent in the last three
months of the year.
"This unemployment decrease was related to
the creation of 50,000 jobs, especially in
the construction industry", Coordinating
Minister of Production Nathalie Cely said.
In October 2009 the government allocated
$2.5 billion from which $1.7 million came
from Ecuadorâ�Ös readily available foreign
reserve and $773 million from the Central
Bank of Ecuador.
A survey carried out in the five most
populated cities in the country showed 6.1
percent of unemployment in Quito, 11.7
percent in Guayaquil, 4.7 in Cuanca, 8.5 in
Machala and 3.9 in Ambato.
Regarding last semester (from July to
September 2009) Machala, Guayaquil and
Cuenca showed significant changes because
unemployment decreased from 9.5 to 8.5
percent in Machala, from 13 to 11.7 percent
in Guayaquil and from 6.5 to 4.7 percent in
Cuenca.
The report showed an improvement in job
quality, as the employees with social
security increased from 40.7 percent to 50.1
percent in a year.
