Earthquake Strikes in
Eastern Venezuela
CARACAS - An earthquake measuring 5.4
degrees at a depth of 2.4 km struck 25 miles
from east Carupano in the Venezuela state of
Sucre at 13:30 (local time) without causing
victims.
According to Francisco Garces, president of
Venezuelan Foundation of Seismological
Research (FUNVISIS) the quake stroke a big
part of the northeastern territories of the
country in the states of Sucre, Anzoátegui
and Nueva Esparta.
Garces expressed by telephone to Venezolana
de Television that the teams in charge of
quake area exploration are getting to
region.
According to Garces there's no exact figure
of damages so far, although the quake might
have important manifestations because it
struck near the terrestrial surface.
Enrique Maestre, governor of Sucre state,
stated the quake struck highly in the towns
of Casany and Cariaco in the municipalities
of Mejias and Sucre. |
