Couple Evading US Tax Man Extradited From Costa Rica

Lin and Christine Wenger-Bartee, a husband and wife formerly of Grass Valley, California, have been extradited from Costa Rica on charges of tax evasion and bankruptcy fraud.

According to the indictment, the defendants failed to file a federal tax return for the year 2001. In 2002, despite receiving substantial sums in income and from the sale of assets, they transferred almost us$240,000 to Ms. Wenger-Bartee’s parents, who then transferred over half that amount to a bank in Costa Rica.

In April 2003, the couple filed bankruptcy, but failed to list the IRS as a creditor, and failed to identify all of the income they received in 2002, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Philip Ferrari, who is prosecuting this case.

After the Bankruptcy Court denied discharge of debts, they left the United States for Costa Rica, where they have since been living in a remote area, prosecutors say.
