Who is "Marito mortadela", the beloved
singer of Avenida Central in downtown San
José?
His real name is Mario Mario Gilberto Solano
Quirós, is over 40 years of age and leaves
his house in Los Cuadros de Goicoechea at
8am every morning to entertain passers by on
the boulevard of the capital.
Strumming his ukulele and singing
undecipherable words to a music that has
neither a bear or rythm, Marito has been
doing it for more than 20 years, since the
death of his mother when he was 21 years of
age.
He lives with his only family, his sister,.
Marito iss 54 years of age, but says he
feels 14.
Marito was in the news recently when vandals
damaged the "his cow", one of the cows of
last year's cow parade in San José donated
to him by the municipality. The cow is being
restored and soon will be back on the
boulevard.
Marito says he earns between ¢5.000 and
¢10.000 colones dialy from donations and is
often assaulted and has been hit by vehicles
on at least two occasions.
