Guevara Promises Dollarization and Lower
Taxes; Chinchilla Confident To Win In First
Round
Otto Guevara, the presidential candidate for
the Movimiento Libertario (ML) party said he
plans to "dollarize" the Costa Rican economy
if elected.
Guevara made known his proposal during a
presentation of a "plan de acción" (plan of
action), in which he also promises a
computer for every student in primary school
and lower sales and income taxes.
Guevara explained that his plan includes
sending the proposal to dollarize the
economy to the legislature and call a public
referendum in 2011, to let the people decide
if they want to adopt the American currency
as their own.
On the side of the street, front runner
Laura Chinchilla of the Partido Liberación
Nacional (PLN) is confident that she will
win the presidency in the first round and
assures there will be no second round.
Chinchilla says that she has shown her
capacity to lead, to make decisions,
contrary to what her opponents say.
A candidate must obtain 40% or greater of
the vote on election day on February 7th. If
no candidate obtains the 40%, then a second
round vote is called for between the top two
candidates.
In the latest poll, Chinchilla leads with a
36.7% support, followed by Gueavara with
16.2%, Ottón Solís of the Partido Acción
Ciudadana with 8.5% and Luis Fishman, "el
menos malo" (the least bad) with 2.2%. |
