Salvadorans Sent 8.5% Less Money Home In 2009

SAN SALVADOR - El Salvador's Central Bank says Salvadoran migrants sent home 8.5 percent less money last year than in 2008.

The bank says Salvadorans working abroad sent back $3.46 billion in 2009, compared to $3.78 billion in 2008.

The bank attributes the drop in part to the economic downturn and high unemployment rates in the United States. About 2.5 million Salvadorans live in the U.S.

Remittances are one of the main sources of income for this Central American nation, which uses the dollar as its national currency.
