Honduran Cardinal Visit Rejected in Germany

BERLIN - A four-day-visit of Honduran Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez has sparked strong criticism in Germany as he was a supporter of the coup of June 28 against President Zelaya.

The head of the Episcopal Conference of Honduras is visiting Munster city in the state of Renania in North Westfalia.

He was welcomed by the Germany-Honduran Association founded in 2000 by the Christian Democrat official and present head of the cultural department of Duisburg city, Karl Janssen, who introduced Rodriguez as a champion of peace and democracy. That presentation and the invitation generated strong criticism.

"Cardinal Rodriguez is not exactly a truly representative of Christian doctrine," Silvia Ayala, a deputy of Honduran Democratic Unification Party told Prensa Latina.

Humanitarian Christian groups also rejected the invitation of the Honduran Cardinal.

"Taking into account the Cardinal's support to the illegitimate actions in favour of the coup, his presence in Germany is not understandable", said Thomas Kr ñmer-Broscheit, head of Christian Initiative Romero.

"We cannot understand why the hosts did not ask him questions about his position after the coup", Kr ñmer-Broscheid said in a press release supported by other Christian groups, including the Ecumenical Office for Peace and Justice in Munich, Bavaria.
