EU, Central America to
Resume Association Talks
BRUSSELS - The European Union (EU) and
Central America will resume negotiations for
signing an Association Agreement halted
after the ousting of Honduras Constitutional
President Manuel Zelaya.
The chief of the delegation of the European
Commission for Central America and Panama
Mendel Goldstein reported the first session
is expected to be held by the end of
February and a second one in April.
He emphasized the objective is to reach the
EU and Latin American and Caribbean Summit
on May 18 in Madrid, with a text approved,
which event will be held with the presidency
pf the community bloc that has started this
month.
The 27 countries members of the EU paralyzed
the contacts over the Central American
countries agreement last July after Honduras
Putsch.
By the date the two parts has already had
over 90 percent of the content of the
agreement except some commercial aspects
related with key products like sugar, meat
and dairies.
Goldstein did not mention if those talks
will accept Honduran elected President
Porfirio Lobo who assumed the presidency of
this country since last January after a vote
that has not yet been recognized by the
European Union. |
