Fishman "El Menos Malo" Candidate

With less than a month to go before Costa Ricans take the polls, the 2010 presidential election campaign is expected to heat up, as candidates vie for the attention of the voters to choose them come February 7th.

One candidate, near the bottom of the list according to all the polls, is Luis Fishman, leading the political battle scarred Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC).

Although the second place candidate, Otto Guevara of the Movimiento Libertartio (ML), and third place, Ottón Solís of the Partido Acción Cuidadana (PAC), hit hard with personal attacks against first place candidate, Laura Chinchilla of the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), Fishman has been relatively obscure.

However, that changed over the last couple of days.

While the other candidates continue with the flurry of personal attacks, the Fishman camp has taken a completely different approach: Fishman is being sold as the candidate ‘menos malo’ (least bad).

The advertising campaing launched by the Fishman group asks voters "who will be voting for?", with ten people responding "the least bad one".

Bumper stickers promote the slogan "Fishman, el menos malo”.

Fishman took over the leadership of the PUSC after former president, Rafael Ángel Calderón, stepped down as the party presidential candidate when a court found the former president guilty of embezzelement on October 5, 2009.
