Panama Remembers
Heroes of 1964
PANAMA - Panama people pays tribute to the
46th anniversary of the heroic deed of
January 9, in defense of the countrY's
sovereignty from US policy on the Panama
Canal.
This day in 1964, 22 people died and 500
were wounded after a protest of young
Panamanians for the insult inflicted by the
US to the flag and to their homeland.
These actions paved the way to the signature
of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties in 1977 by
General Omar Torrijos and then US President
James Carter.
These treaties put an end to the US
administration on the Panama Canal, which
lasted 85 years.
Torrijos' administration negotiations paved
the way to recover Panama sovereignty and
also to close US military bases in that
territory.
Organizations of the National Front for the
Defense of Economic and Social Rights (FRENADESO)
made a call to a mass meeting at the place
where the historical deed took place.
FRENADESO expressed that the tribute to the
heroes is also part of a protest against the
US plans of installing 11 air-naval bases in
that territory with the non convincing
argument of fighting drug trafficking.
Although their real intensions are to use
them against the progressive governments in
the region, FRENADESO concluded. |
