Computer For Every Student, Otto Guevara
Promises If Elected
Otto Guevara, presidential candidate for the
Movimiento Libertario (ML) party made the
promise on Friday, in an effort to better
education in the country, to supply every
student in Costa Rica with a notebook
computer.
Guevara said that the computer would be
internet ready and loaded with specialty
programs to aid learning and will be tough
enough to withstand abuse and bad weather
conditions.
The presidential candidate said the program
would be funded by the Fondo Nacional de
Telecomunicaciones (Fonatel), similar to the
successful program already in place in
Uruguay.
The announcement was made following a live
chat program by Al Día where he also said
that, if elected, he would end the Riteve
monopoly on vehicular inspection by 2012,
that he would order the Policía de Tránsito
to be tougher on drivers who insist on
parking on downtown streets, clogging
transit and looking forward to the 2014
presidential campaign where it will be more
in cyberspace than the print and television
media.
Guevara has been in constant second place to
the PLN's Laura Chinchilla, moving up
several points from the polls in November to
those of this month, and could be a key
factor in a run off election if neither of
the candidates obtains at least 40% of the
votes.
