Honduras Reports 212 Deaths During New Year Celebrations

TEGUCIGALPA - At least 212 people died of violence during the New Year celebrations, Honduran police spokesman Orlin Cerrato said Monday during a press conference.

The figure was based on a survey of violence from Dec. 16 to 31,Cerrato said, adding that it included 86 deaths by Christmas and 126 between that holiday and New Year's day.

Cerrato said the police had enhanced security efforts in the past year, and over 2,000 raids had been carried out across the country.

Similar deaths in the corresponding period of 2008 was 201, including 159 violent deaths and 42 victims of traffic accidents.
