Proposes Accord
Bogota - Colombian Polo Democratico Alternativo (PDA)
party presidential candidate Gustavo Petro
proponed on Monday what he called a great
democratic agreement against violence,
social inequality and drug trafficking.
In statements to a local radio station,
Petro held that his victory in the PDA vote
on Sunday is a "tribute to free vote," which
he considered the foundations of a free and
modern policy in the country.
The politician also said the victory at the
polls also belong to the theory of fostering
a Polo Democratic party that summons to a
great agreement to save the 1991
Constitution, thus he did not rule out that
could be reached by means of a consultation
among the different parties.
Petro won 223,627 votes after 98 percent of
the ballot papers were counted, while Carlos
Gaviria, in the second position and who most
polls showed as the winner, won 203,443
votes in a day characterized by the
citizenry's abstention.
"I am greeting him (Gaviria) from here. I
think we made an honorable and honest
campaign, and Carlos Gaviria will keep being
the person that won more votes in the
Colombian left's history," he told the
media.
He has played an honorable role in his
personal, professional and political life,
and it is my turn now to pay a tribute to
him, he said.
The electoral period on Sunday was totally
peaceful and normal, since the beginning at
8:00, local time, until it concluded at
16:00 hours.
