Cartago potato growers are upset with the import of 2 container loads of potatoes from the United States, fearing that the imported product will affect them negoatively.

The Cámara Costarricense de Productores de Papa de Cartago is made up of some 200 local growers who, led by Fabián Segura, say that even though the importer had planned on selling the produce after it arrived two weeks ago, the potatoes have been allowed to sprout roots and can no be used as seed in the fields.

Segura said that that is totally against the intetions of the import and are asking the Ministerio de Agricultura (MAG) to regulate the quantity of imports.

The local growers say the imported potatoes are of a lower quality and sold at much lower prices, although buyers do not pass on the savings to the consumer.
