Guatemalan Police Seize Pseudoephedrine,
Arrest Four
Guatemala - Guatemalan authorities seized a
pseudoephedrine shipment worth $2.6 million
and arrested four Hondurans who were
transporting the substance, the National
Civilian Police, or PNC, said Sunday.
The pseudoephedrine, whose importation and
sale has been banned in the Central American
country since February, was found inside a
cargo container sent from Honduras that was
intercepted on the northern outskirts of
Guatemala City.
“The shipment consisted of 200 boxes of the
medication Gripofem, with each unit
containing 7,200 tablets. The boxes were
seized and sent to the PNC’s warehouses,”
the law enforcement agency said.
Martir Henry Banegas, 36, Gerardo Herrera
Varela, 26, Rene Hernandez, 44, and Santiago
Nuñez Murcia, 38, were arrested for drug
trafficking.
This is the eighth pseudoephedrine shipment
seized this year in Guatemala.
A total of 6,547 kilos of pure
pseudoephedrine and nearly 383,000 tablets
of the substance, worth an estimated $14.7
million, have been seized, the PNC said.
Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are used to
manufacture methamphetamine, an illegal
stimulant. |
