Legislative Candidate Gunned Down in
Honduras
Tegucigalpa - A legislative candidate for
the PINU-SD party was gunned down in
Tegucigalpa, police said, adding that the
killing was not related to the political
crisis in Honduras.
Marco Antonio Canales Villatoro died
Saturday at a private hospital, where he was
taken after two men on a motorcycle opened
fire on him as he was leaving a church,
National Police spokesman Orlin Cerrato
said.
The preliminary investigation determined
that the killing was not linked to the
political crisis sparked by the June 28 coup
against President Mel Zelaya, who returned
to the country last week, Cerrato said.
“We have ruled out initially that (the
crime) is related to the people who are
going around protesting (in the streets in
favor or against Zelaya),” the police
spokesman said.
Canales Villatoro was murdered “in cold
blood” and officials should “investigate”
the killing, PINU-SD president Jorge Aguilar
said.
The 40-year-old Canales Villatoro was an
alternate PINU-SD legislative candidate from
Francisco Morazan province, where
Tegucigalpa is located, Aguilar told
Tegucigalpa’s HRN radio.
“We are upset, we know it’s a tense
situation, but it does not justify murdering
anybody,” Aguilar said.
Canales Villatoro “was a pretty quiet
person, a serious professional, responsible,
this did not have to happen,” Aguilar said. |
