Interim Government Expels Most
Members of OAS Delegation

Honduran post-coup authorities Roberto Micheletti on Sunday ordered to detain the
five members of an Organization of American
States (OAS) delegation for six hours and
then expelled four of them, delegation
member John Biehl said on Sunday.
Biehl, a Chilean, said two U.S. citizens, a
Canadian and a Colombian were expelled.
Meanwhile, Carlos Lopez Contreras, foreign
minister of the Honduran interim government,
told a press conference that it was not the
right moment for Honduras to receive the
delegation.
He said Honduras would set a date for a
meeting with the OAS next week.
"They (OAS delegates) understood it (was not
the right time), they recognized they had
been warned, but they decided to try their
luck to see if in some way their entry would
be allowed," said Lopez.
The OAS said last week it would send a
delegation to Honduras, but the post-coup
government replied in a Wednesday statement
that the delegation would be received at a
later and unspecified date, which must first
be agreed by Micheletti's diplomats.
The Honduran de facto government said that
it would only receive a delegation led by
Costa Rican President Oscar Arias and
Panamanian Vice President Juan Carlos
Varela.
Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was ousted
in a military coup on June 28. The OAS later
decided to suspend Honduras's membership
after the post-coup authorities missed a
deadline on Zelaya's reinstatement.
