Strikes Rock Salvadoran Capital
San Salvador - Laid-off workers from three
Salvadoran municipalities staged protests in
El Salvador's capital Wednesday against
measures they considered unjust.
Dozens of people picketed San Salvador's
City Hall, rallying in front of District 2
offices. They were supporting the 300
workers who were given no compensation upon
being dismissed from their posts.
One such worker, Ada Villalta, told
Salvadoran media that she was informed the
city had run out of money during her exit
interview with Mayor Norman Quijano.
Villalta said that while workers were being
fired without redundancy payments, the city
government was recruiting on a monthly
salary of over 1,000 U.S. dollars.
Some other protestors blocked the road
linking Metapan to Santa Ana. They claimed
that people had been unjustly laid off in
Santa Ana, which is now under the governance
of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation
Front.
Meanwhile, local government workers in
Quezaltepeque also began to protest by
stopping to work and sealing municipal
buildings.
