Milk And Diary Products More Expensive Today
The wave of price increases has touched milk
and derivatives, so don't be surprised if
prices for dairy products at supermarkets
and "pulperias" will be higher this morning.
The first dairy products to see the increase
are those of the Cooperativa de Productores
de Leche Dos Pinos R.L., which will be 4.9%
higher this morning. Other dairy producers
are expected to follow suit in adjusting
their prices, in the coming days.
Dos Pinos explained that it has not
increased its prices for more than a year,
further explaining that the increase is
necessary for the financial health and
growth of the company.
Dos Pinos says the last increased prices in
July 2008.
The prices affect most of Dos Pinos
products, particularly the company's most
sold product, the one litre milk product in
the white box that will now sell for ¢450
colones (up from ¢400), followed by best
sellers like natilla la granja that now
sells for ¢520 (up from ¢495) and the Pinito
powdered milk that now sells for ¢2.030 for
a 400 gram package (up from ¢1.935).
Dos Pinos claims that even though its best
seller went up in price by ¢50 colones, it
is still the lowest price in Central
America.
Ernesto Artiñano, marketing director for the
Investigación y Desarrollo de Dos Pinos,
explained that the company loses ¢60 colones
for every litre of pasteurized milk it sells
and that the increase was necessary as the
company could not absorb the loss any
longer.
The price increase has the approval of the
Ministerio de Economía Industria y Comercio
(MEIC), saying the increase is justified to
be able to keep the dairy producers healthy. |
