Bolivia Voter Registration Nears Completion
La Paz - Nearly
a month before expected, the Bolivian
National Electoral Court (CNE) accomplished
the goal of registering about 3.5 million
eligible voters for the upcoming elections
in December.
Cambio daily quoteed CNE Chair Antonio
Costas as saying that the figure exceeded
expectations, and attributed this result to
good planning of activities, in spite of
short time granted under the Electoral
Transition Law 4021.
Costas said the biometric electoral roll,
which includes fingerprints, photos and
signature of every voter, will continue
until October 15, and forecasted an increase
in the number of people registered.
He ruled out any change in the electoral
schedule for the organization of the polls.
On Thursday, President Evo Morales termed
satisfactory the process started on August
1st and called eligible voters to register.
At least five million electors are expected
to register, taking into account the
National Statistics Institute (INE)
predictions, according to Morales.
On December 6, Bolivians are expected to
elect their president and vice president, as
well as the members of the Plurinational
Legislative Assembly (name to be adopted by
Congress in 2010).
On that same date, the regions of La Paz,
Oruro, Cochabamba, Potosi, Chuquisaca and
Gran Chaco, as well as a dozen indigenous
municipalities, are also expected to decide
on their autonomic status. |
