10 Cops Arrested on Drug Charges

Costa Rica’s Policía Control de Drogas (PCD) -  Drug Control Police -  arrested 10 officers from different police agencies and of various ranks on charges that they aided Colombian drug traffickers, the ministerio de Seguridad confirmed.

The PCD also arrested three Colombians allegedly involved in drug smuggling along the Pacific coast, a ministry spokesman told EFE.

Among the officers detained were the former head of the anti-drug program in the central Pacific region and a precinct chief who allegedly helped unload drugs from boats.

The officers helped unload speedboats that arrived from Colombia, ensured that the drugs made it to a warehouse in the Central Valley, warned drug traffickers of anti-drug operations and tipped them off as to the areas under surveillance by police, the PCD said.

The investigation of the officers started several months ago, following several cocaine seizures, the Security Ministry said.

Police have made three seizures, totaling more than 2.5 tons of cocaine, since July, officials said, adding that the drugs were linked to the suspects in this case.
