Three Tons of Cocaine Seized from
Panama-Flagged Vessel
Panama - Panamanian authorities
announced the seizure of three tons of
cocaine from a Panama-flagged vessel
intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard in
international waters.
Three Panamanians, two Venezuelans and a
Peruvian were arrested in the operation,
according to a statement Wednesday from
Panama’s National Aeronaval Service, or SNA.
The Cristal was intercepted Tuesday by the
U.S. Coast Guard at a spot 55 nautical miles
north of Cabo de La Vela, a headland in
Colombia’s northeastern Guajira Peninsula.
A total of 115 sacks of cocaine have been
counted thus far, while authorities were
still trying to determine if more quantities
of the drug were hidden inside the boat.
Prosecutor Edwin Guardia confirmed to
journalists that approximately three tons of
cocaine were seized.
Colombia is the world’s biggest producer of
cocaine, while Central America is a major
transshipment route for drugs bound for the
