UN Reiterates Support to Honduran President
United Nations - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon ratified on
Thursday the UN support to President of
Honduras Manuel Zelaya.
The constitutional process in that Central
American country must be respected and the
authority of his elected president must be
protected and guaranteed, Ban said in a
press conference.
He recalled that all UN member countries
expressed their support to Zelaya, who was
stripped of power and taken away from his
country in a coup on June 28.
That backing was expressed in a resolution
condemning the coup and the breaking of
constitutional, democratic order in
Honduras.
The text repudiated the interruption of the
legitimate exercise of power and the
reinstatement of the democratically-elected
president and demanded the immediate and
unconditional restoration of the
constitutional government.
It also called on all States to refrain from
recognizing any government but Zelaya's and
expressed its backing of regional efforts
deployed t o solve political crisis in
Honduras.
Zelaya is scheduled to speak before the UN
General Assembly on the first day of
debates, Honduran Ambassador Jorge Arturo
