Unasur "Strengthened" Even Without Agreement: Ecuadorian FM

Quito - The Ecuadorian foreign minister said Wednesday the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) was "strengthened" even though the Tuesday meeting of defense and foreign ministers produced no agreement.

"The challenge continues...and this multilateral mechanism, in one way or another, was strengthened as it was possible to work in an open, frank way with constructive dialogue," Fander Falconi said.

Like in other areas, the Unasur is in a "process" to achieve consensus on security issues, Falconi said.

Unasur foreign and defense ministers met on Tuesday to discuss ways to reduce the military tension in the region due to the Colombia-U.S. military cooperation agreement and Venezuela's decision to buy Russian weapons.

However, the meeting yielded no agreement due partially to reservations from Colombia after a dispute between Washington and Caracas over military deals in the region.
