Honduran Candidates Support Costa Rican
President's Crisis Settlement Proposal
Four Honduran presidential candidates
expressed their support on Wednesday for
Costa Rican President Oscar Arias' proposal
of solving the political crisis in their
country, which would allow ousted President
Manuel Zelaya to return to power.
The four candidates said in a statement
after meeting with Arias that they backed
the deal to reinstate ousted Honduran
president Manuel Zelaya.
However, the four did not directly call on
the interim Honduran government to drop
opposition to Arias' proposal.
Arias, the chief mediator in the Honduran
crisis touched off by a coup against Zelaya
on June 28, has proposed that Zelaya return
to office to finish his term, which ends
next January, and coup participants be given
amnesty. But the de facto Honduran
government has refused to allow Zelaya back.
Arias has also warned that the Nov. 29
general elections would have no credibility
unless Zelaya returns to power beforehand.
Earlier on Wednesday, de facto Honduran
President Roberto Micheletti said that he
supported the Honduran presidential
candidates' meeting with Arias.
Micheletti, appointed by the parliament a
few hours after the June coup, told local
radio "Radio America" that the candidates
could tell Arias "what their hearts tell
them to say."
Micheletti said that the solution to the
political crisis in his country is
elections, which should be recognized by the
international community.
Micheletti said they were having free
elections according to the law and "that
will give us the big opportunity of obliging
the whole world to open the places that it
has closed to us."
