Error Means Gas Price Hike Takes Effect

If you didn't fill up your gasoline tank
last night ahead of the increase that was to
take effect this morning, don't worry, since
the price hike won't take effect until
12:01am Friday due to a technical error.
The new gasoline prices and taxi fares, by
error, were not published in the official
government publication, La Gaceta, on
Wednesday as had been planned and reported.
Regulations are clear that any change in the
price of public prices and services - up or
down - must first be published in La Gaceta
before they can take effect.
In the case of gasoline prices - the only
exception - price changes occur the
following day. With all other prices, like
taxi fares they take effect the day of
publication.
The Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios
Públicos (ARESEP), the government regulator
of public prices and services, approved the
hike in gasoline prices and taxi fares last
month to take effect the middle of
September.
The Aresep is also analyzing a proposal for
a reduction in gasoline prices that would
take effect by the middle of October, as
well as attempting to get the Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) to
reimburse customers ¢1.1 billion colones for
ICE's stall tactic that delayed the
reduction in electrical rates for 9 days. |
