President Launches Aid
Program For Low-Income Elders
Panama - Panamanian
President Ricardo Martinelli on Wednesday
launched a social program to give us$100 dollars monthly in aid to people older than
70 and without social security.
The initiative, dubbed "100 at 70," which is
the first social program of this kind in
Central America and one of the electoral
promises of Martinelli, who took office on
July 1, will benefit 20,000 people.
The second stage of program will start in
November and include payments to 30,000
people.
The aid will be retroactive since Martinelli
took office, which means the first batch of
beneficiaries of the program will each get
us$300 dollars at the first month of payment,
since Martinelli has been in power for three
months, and the second batch of
beneficiaries, who will be paid in November,
will each get us$500 dollars.
