Independence Day Today!
Today, September 15, with the sounds of
drums, Costa Rica celebrates it's 188th
anniversary of Independence. The day is
filled with civic activities that include
parades of marching student bands in all
cantones and barrios.
For weeks students have been practicing the
drum beats that will be part of today's
tradition parades.
Unlike the romeria (August 1 walk to
Cartago), the ministerio de salud has not
suspended any of the planned activities.
Salud officials explained that the
festivities and celebrations are local and
there is no massive concentration of people
in one place like the romeria.
The day is also a legal holiday, banks and
most businesses are closed. Employees who
are required to work today will be paid
double their normal salary for the day.
Some communities, however, like Moravia will
again this year be without a parade. The
decision again this year on the part of
municipal officials is to avoid the
drunkedness and disorder of the past, that
in some years escalated to violence.
Some areas of Desamparados and Pavas will
also be without any organized celebrations.
