Independence Torch Making It's Way To
Cartago
It was shortly after 10am Sunday when the
"independence day" torch arrived in Costa
Rica at Peñas Blancas, where it was received
by the ministro de Educación Leonardo
Garnier, surrounded by students and teachers
from all over the country.
The ceremony marks the start of Costa Rica's
188th anniversary of independence that is
celebrated on September 15.
One hour later Yalile Salas Pérez, seventh
grade student of the Liceo Nocturno de la
Cruz, was the first to take the torch to
begin the 350 kilometre trek to Cartago,
arriving Monday night around 8pm, where it
will be received by Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias.
A total of 3.500 students will be handling
the torch on its trip to the Viejo
Metropolis.
As a precautionary measure against the AH1N1
flu virus, the ministerio de Salud, would
not let any student or teacher displaying
symptoms of a cold to take part in the
activities.
The carrying of the torch is symbolic of how
the news of independence travelled to Costa
Rica, about one month after the signing of
the accord in Guatemala.
