Up and Down Gasoline Prices: Drop
Approved, But Prices To Increase First
Gasoline prices in Costa Rica are controlled
by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep) - government regulator of
public prices and services - which, on
request of the state refinery RECOPE, holds
monthly hearings to determine prices of
fuel.
Two weeks ago the Aresep approved a price
hike that goes into effect next next.
Despite that, yesterday it approved a price
decrease that goes into effect in October.
Let us explain.
This week, probably Wednesday, one day after
the national holiday, the price of gasoline
will go up ¢34 colones for a litre of super,
¢33 for regular and ¢34 for diesel.
That increase will push the price of
gasoline to ¢601 from the current ¢567 for a
litre of super, to ¢582 from ¢549 for
regular and to ¢506 from ¢472 for diesel.
Kerosene, Av-gas, jet fuel and LPG also go
up.
However, come the middle of October those
prices will drop by ¢26 colones for a litre
of super, ¢24 for regular and ¢22 for
diesel.
In October the price of gasoline at the pump
will be ¢575 down from ¢601 for a litre of
super, ¢558 down from ¢582 for regular and
¢484 down from ¢506 for diesel.
So, in effect we will be paying higher than
lower, but still higher that the price of
gasoline today, as the net effect of the
price change in October will be up ¢8
colones for a litre of super, ¢9 for regular
and ¢12 for diesel.
