In Killing of Guatemala Lawyer
GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Authorities in
Guatemala on Friday arrested seven suspects,
including five police officers, in the
killing of a prominent lawyer who had
accused President Álvaro Colom of
involvement in his death in a posthumously
released video.
The arrests were announced by the
International Commission Against Impunity in
Guatemala, a United Nations body set up in
2007 to help a judiciary riddled with
corruption, which was invited by the
government to investigate the May 10 murder
of Rodrigo Rosenberg.
The commission said other suspects had
planned and ordered the killing, but it did
not release their names to avoid
compromising the investigation.
In a video that surfaced after the murder,
Mr. Rosenberg said, “If you are watching
this message, it is because I was
assassinated by President Álvaro Colom.”
The president denied any involvement, and
his government has suggested that criminal
or political interests were behind the
video.
