Tuna War: Sardimar Charges Competition With
"Dumping"
Sardimar, the leader in Costa Rican in tuna
production and distribution, is not too
happy with the competition by the Spanish
tuna producer, Calvo, pressuring the the
Ministerio de Economía (MEIC) to take
action.
However, the Asociación de Consumidores
Libres (Free Consumers Association) is
asking the MEIC not to bow down to pressure
and rejects the claim made by Sardimar
against Calvo, accusing it of "dumping".
"What dumping? the price of Calvo tuna in
Costa Rica is not less that the price in El
Salvador. Sardimar does not want
competition", said José Joaquín Fernández,
vicepresident of the Asociación.
Sardimar says that Calvo is selling its
products in Costa Rica at a price less than
the country of origin.
However, the Asociación says that Sardimar
wants to keep its monopoly, blaming the MEIC
bowing down to pressure by companies who
want to limit competition, granting
companies like Sardimar "privileges",
limiting competition to take legal action.
The Asociación is in favour of the creation
of a competitive tuna market in Costa Rica,
where consumers have the option to purchase
the product they can afford.
Fernández is making a call to Sardimar to
end its charges and rather lower its prices
and compete freely like it advocated during
the free trade agreement negotiations with
the United States.

Calvo tuna products are available in five
continents. The Spanish company employs more
than 3,000 people worldwide. In Costa Rica
it offers direct competition to Sardimar. |
