Postponement of Ley de Tránsito Approved In
First Debate
Legislative deputies last night voted in
first debate the reforms to the new Ley de
Tránsito that would go into effect in six
months and not on September 23.
The vote was 37 and favour and 4 against.
Jorge Méndez, head of the Liberación
Nacional party, said the six month extention
would apply to the new fines and point
system called for in the new law passed las
December.
The objection to the extension came from the
four Movimiento Libertario legislators.
Although the proposal, if and when approved
in second debate, pushes back its
introduction to March 1, 2010, the drunk and
reckless driving provisions will go into
effect on September 23, when drunk drivers
and drivers under the influence of drugs
will have to pay a ˘227.000 colones fine and
possible jail.
The second and required vote is expected
next Wednesday, September 16.
