EU Policy Towards Central America Criticized

Berlin - Opposition parties and non governmental organizations criticized the double standard maintained by the European Union (EU) towards Central America.

Jurge Klute, euro deputy of the German socialist party explained that last year the EU suspended aid to Nicaragua due to alleged irregularities in the elections that was never proven.

However, in other countries violations have been detected in elections without affect problems in bilateral relations with Germany, Klute added in an interview to Neues Deutschland daily.

Referring to this situation the deputy of the European Parliament gave the example of the United States by which George W. Bush assumed the presidency twice through irregularity in vote counting.

Klute pointed out that the EU decided to continue suspending aid to Honduras while refusing to exclude the coup regime of Honduras from negotiations on an agreement of association between the EU and Central America.

For his part, Rudi Kurz, of the Nicaragua Forum based in Heidelberg in southern Germany, warned that the German government had transferred more than 10 million euros to the neo liberal government of Enrique Bolanos.

Kurz who in 2008 wrote a commentary on the changes introduced by the Sandinista government in social policy in Nicaragua, assured that suspending aid to the budget would be stupidity and a very dubious action.

While the EU blocks delivering of millions of dollars in aid to the Nicaraguan budget, the Latin American Committee of the European Council decided not to exclude the coup government of Honduras in negotiations on agreement of EU-Central America association.
