Proposes Turkmenistan Join
OPEC-Like Organization

President Hugo Chavez proposed on Monday
Turkmenistan join the planned Gas Exporters
Organization, similar to the Organization of
Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
According to the Venezuelan Foreign
Ministry, Chavez made the proposal during a
historical visit to Turkmenistan.
The idea of creating the Gas Exporters
Organization was first put forward at the
Gas Exporting Countries Forum in late 2008,
and was supported by gas-rich nations
Russia, Iran and Venezuela.
Turkmenistan is rich in oil and gas.
President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said
his country has the fourth largest gas
reserves after Russia, Iran and Qatar.
The visit by Chavez marked the first of a
South American leader to Turkmenistan.
Before arriving in Turkmenistan, Chavez had
visited Libya, Algeria, Syria and Iran.
Chavez started his 13-day eight-nation four
on Aug. 30, which will also take him to
Belarus, Russia and Spain. |
