Colombia, Venezuela Tension Persists
Caracas - The atmosphere of tension between
the governments of Colombia and Venezuela
still remains Monday after announcing a
Colombian military plan against this
country, over one month of freezing
bilateral relations.
Retired Gen. Melvin Lopez called Sunday to
adopt some measures faced with an offensive
plan against Venezuela, developed by the
Colombian army and supported by the US
administration.
Questioned by journalist Jose Vicente
Rangel, Lopez stated that the denominated
Centaur Plan seeks at first to neutralize
Venezuelan military troops in the nation's
bordering zones.
The aim of the struggle to destabilize
Venezuela is the appropriation of national
energy sources, mainly oil.
Faced with regional war threat, President
Hugo Chavez proposed on August 7 to create
peace bases during a meeting between a
Venezuelan coalition and representatives of
the Colombians for Peace organization.
The South American statesman announced on
August 25 a possible breaking-off of
relations with the neighboring country, for
the installation of seven US military bases,
as a declaration of war. |
