ICE To Unify GSM Cellular Networks On
Saturday
Saturday the Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) will unify the two GSM
cellular networks into one and is asking all
customers of the GSM service to turn off
their phones on Saturday night and then turn
them back on Sunday.
The change will affect some 1.8 million
cellular telephone users in Costa Rica, as
ICE completely disconnects the Alcatel
network, transferring all the lines from
that network to the Ericsson network.
The changeover should go smoothly according
to ICE technicians and customers should not
be inconvenienced, as most cellular phones
will automatically switch over to the new
network.
However, in the case of phones who do not
make the switch automatically, ICE will be
publishing a series of technical steps for
users to take to implement the change.
The change will cost ICE us$17.8 million
dollars.
The change will not affect the 300.000
customers on the TDMA network. |
