Regulator Approves Hike In Gasoline Prices And Taxi Fares

The Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep) today approved a hike in the price of gasoline and taxi fares.

Gasoline prices will go up ¢34 colones for a litre of regular and deisel, and ¢33 for super.

The regulating authority says that the variation of prices on international markets for the period of July 30, 2009 to August 13, 2009, is the basis for the increase.

With the adjustment, the price of gasoline jumps to ¢601 for a litre of super (up from the current ¢567); ¢582 for regular (up from ¢549); and, ¢506 for diesel (up from ¢472).

A taxi fare hike of ¢25 colones for the first kilometre and ¢30 for an additional kilometre was also approved, raising taxi fares to ¢455 for the first kilometre (up from ¢430) and ¢415 for additional kilometres (up form ¢385).

Both gasoline price and taxi fare hikes go into effect on September 16.
